The undeniable appeal of a sharp-suited, mature-beyond-its-years baby with Alec Baldwin’s gravelly timbre isn’t enough to sustain a DreamWorks sequel that, much like The Croods: A New Age before it, pitches its action at an aggressively frenetic tempo. There’s fun to be had watching the first film’s heroes regress to infanthood in order to infiltrate a school for gifted children. Yet jokes about Donald Trump will not only sail over the target audience’s heads, but also ensure Tom McGrath’s animation arrives already carbon-dated.
