11 Tune down to cover more ground

Total Guitar - - FROM GET MORE YOUR GEAR -

Singer-songwriters and anyone playing covers has to constantly think about the relationship with the vocal range and the keys they play in. Tuning down a semitone (D# G# C# F# A# D#) with your guitar can enable you or your singer to cover more ground as it brings everything down. It adds a darker, heavier tonality (and was favoured by Alice In Chains) and can impact on intonation – you may need a heavier gauge, or a truss rod tweak. You even have the option to go back to standard tuning by having your capo on the first fret.
