Dear John

How Myles’s Delta blues hero shaped his playing

“I didn’t discover Mississippi John Hurt until much later in life but when I did I kind of fell head-overheels for what he did. The right-hand technique in his playing was what really drew me in. It sounded like there were two guitarists playing and I remember discovering some of those recordings and thinking, ‘Is

there another guy in the room with him? How is he doing this? It was incredible to me. So I tried to sit there and learn the patterns. It was a little frustrating at first but after a while I got a few songs under my belt and as you know with fingerstyle, once you develop a certain technique you can take it and use it in other contexts and, hopefully, you’ll be on autopilot and it’ll work. A song like Hauntedby Design definitely highlights his influence on me as a guitar player. That’s a full-on Mississippi John Hurt guitar approach.”
