don’t miss out Workbook (1989)

Total Guitar - - BACK TRACK -

3 His first solo venture after the disintegration of Hüsker Dü in 1987, Workbook finds Mould in a reflective, sombre mood, with several songs composed on 12-string acoustic and fleshed out with mandolin and sweeping cello arrangements, notably the austere hymnal Sinners And Their Repentances, reminiscent of his former tour mates, REM. And while See A Little Light lays the blueprint for the kind of upbeat earworms he would perfect with Sugar, there’s still a wolf beneath the folk-rock sheep’s clothing: listen to the ominous chime of Poison Years erupt into a squalling solo as Mould rails against his former bandmates (‘Treason is the reason...’).
