The Playlist: Joe Hoare

Orange Goblin’s rifflord in residence Joe Hoare tells us about the guitar influences that helped forge his style…

The first song I remember hearing… Helterskelter – The Beatles

“My dad was always playing The Beatles when I was a kid. I remember him putting on the Whitealbum for the first time at full volume and telling me to duck as a plane was about to crash into the room just before BACKINTHEUSSR came on. Once I’d remerged from under the sofa I was hooked and I have been a massive Beatles fan ever since. But it was Helterskelter that really struck a chord with me. It’s such a great song and just so heavy for its time!”

The tune that made me want to write… Bringitonhome – Led Zeppelin

“The first time I heard Ledzeppelinii through headphones I remember being blown away with all the layers and panning going on around my head and it being almost magical. It’s that whole album that made me want to start writing my own stuff but Bringitonhome was the one that really did it.

I was always into the blues and I remember loving the way the track starts off so stripped back and then that riff kicks in.”

A track I’d like to cover… Lovetaker – Peter Frampton

“It’s on an album by Peter Frampton & Friends (2001) and it’s brilliant. The riff is incredible and the whole song just rocks from start to finish. I doubt we’ll ever cover it though as I’m pretty certain I’m probably the only Peter Frampton fan in the band!”

A solo I admire… Further on up the road– Eric Clapton & Robbie Robertson

“Eric Clapton and Robbie Robertson’s duel soloing on Further on up the road from the film Thelastwaltz by The Band really stands out as a great example of what soloing is all about for me. The band and the crowd just seem to be having the best time and although the solos are nothing clever, they just flow. I think Clapton even hits a few duff notes but it doesn’t matter because the vibe is right.”

The Orange Goblin song I’d play someone who’s never heard our music… Songs Of salem – Orange Goblin

“From our new album, Thewolf Bitesback, or Scorpionica from our third album Thebigblack – they’re both short and to the point. We’ve covered many styles over the years but really we’re just a rock band and I think these tracks really show that. I might then play Thestranger, also from the new album, which starts off as slow blues but then goes all over the place! and then Suicide Division that is simply just a good, old-fashioned twominute, blast beat, punch in the face! Just to show that we’re not justa

one-trick pony!”

A track that reminds me of home when I’m on tour… Tinydancer – Elton John

“On the last big tour we did every time I heard this I would get a little home sick as it was the last song I remembered me, my wife and our kids singing along to in the car.”

The most challenging song to play live… A Eulogyforthedamned – Orange Goblin

“In the past I’ve tended to get a bit carried away in the studio over layering guitars and adding keyboards etc to tracks and then obviously struggling to play ’em live as a five piece. I would love to play the tracks A Eulogyforthedamned and Savemefrom Myself but they just don’t work, unfortunately. For the new album we’ve made sure we can play pretty much all the songs live!”
