Billy Howerdel wrote much of this album on piano but it’s done nothing to diminish the unique gift of his guitar playing. He also knows when not to play, allowing Maynard James Keenan’s voice to fully bloom as an instrument alongside his own. Their dynamic adds more weight when Howerdel does find the spotlight falling on him in Talktalk and the grandeur of By And Down The River’s breaks.
