COURTNEY BARNETT
Known for her frank approach to playing guitar and penning lyrics, Barnett is a slacker-rock queen - minus the regal bling. So far she’s released two acclaimed albums: 2015’s Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit and 2018’s Tell Me How You Really Feel. As a lefty, she learnt to play on “upside down” acoustics, borrowed from friends. Nowadays, she’s often seen with a left-handed American
Standard Telecaster which she bought from ebay so she could retire her previous workhorse: a Harmony Rocket. Robust and unflashy, the Telecaster provides a blank canvas for layers of fuzz and jangly effects. In Courtney’s hands, the trademark Tele twang is softened by her idiosyncratic pickless playing technique which uses the thumb and fingers, yet doesn’t quite resemble “traditional” fingerpicking.
