High Hopes

- From the album: The Division Bell (1994)

The culmination, and high point, of The Division Bell sees Gilmour weaving together what producer Bob Ezrin called a ‘monochrome, high-contrast musical painting’. It starts in a bucolic mood, with birdsong, church bells and buzzing bees setting the tone of nostalgia for Pink Floyd’s past.

Gilmour accompanies himself on nylon-string, and delivers an exquisite acoustic guitar solo, a rare thing on a Floyd recording. The pinnacle of the song sees Gilmour lift off on extended wings for over two minutes on a lap steel guitar tuned in E minor. It’s an appropriate climax to the last Floyd album proper.
