Silverchair remains one of the nation’s most successful rock bands but, after smashing many records over 15 years with its brilliant music, it disappeared in 2011. The story behind the Newcastle-born band, originally dubbed the Innocent Criminals, could give other young music talents hope. The band was discovered before the trio left high school and their rise to fame was fast. Arguably Australia’s best music biographer, Apter has penned the story behind Silverchair’s frontman Daniel Johns, a complex character to say the least. Thrown into the spotlight at a young age, Johns struggled throughout his career as he continuously made headlines. And many times, it was for the wrong reasons. Johns has battled life-threatening anorexia, crippling arthritis and went through the break-up of his five-year marriage to fellow singer Natalie Imbruglia. This is a fascinating insight into Johns as it diarises the highs and lows of his complicated career. SOPHIE ELSWORTH
