DEERAGUN SETS CRACKING PACE

- CAMERON BOON

DEERAGUN has been named as Queensland’s fastest growing suburb for the second year in a row.

The suburb’s population grew by 8.9 per cent in the 12 months until June 2013, according to the latest Housing Industry Association figures, making it the boom suburb of Queensland and the 18th fastest growing in Australia.

Deeragun mother- of- two Christine Reisinger, who moved to the suburb three years ago, was attracted by the family- friendly lifestyle.

“We were living in Adelaide and originally came to Towns- ville to visit some friends, but we just fell in love,” Ms Reisinger said.

“( My partner) Ash’s sister lives in Deeragun.

“And we decided we wanted to live out here.

“It still has that ‘ town’ kind of feeling but there’s so much to do for kids.

“We’ve seen so much pop up since we moved here – there’s a Coles, two Woolies, a Bunnings, restaurants and a hairdresser.

“It was all woodland just a couple of years ago. “And it’s still growing.” Ms Reisinger said Deeragun was ideally located close to major roads like Woolcock St and the Ring Road, which was a massive drawcard for her and her family.

The HIA approved almost $ 150 million worth of new housing developments in the suburb in 2012- 13, after approving more than $ 158 million the year before.

And the boom looks set to continue across the city.

The HIA approved 299 new houses in Townsville between December 2013 and February 2014.

It is 25 more than in the same period last year.

Other high growth Townsville areas include the Northern Beaches ( 6.2 per cent), Bohle Plains ( 5.4 per cent), Wulguru ( 3.8 per cent), Oo- noonba ( 3.5 per cent) and Kelso ( 3.3 per cent).

HIA executive director for North Queensland John Futer said the northern suburbs had seen significant growth over the last nine years and didn’t see why that would change.

“That entire area has been a growth corridor for a while, with new roads and amenities being constantly built,” he said.

“People, particularly families, are seeing an established suburb with established infrastructure.

“There are pools, schools, shops, sporting facilities and places to get food.

“It’s a very ‘ if you build it, they will come’ situation.”
