BLOOD PRESSURE IN ORIGIN RIVALRY

- CHRISTIE ANDERSON

WHILE hope may be lost on the footy field for Queensland, the Maroons are still in with a chance of toppling the Blues in the blood donation battle.

Today is the last chance for State of Origin fans to donate blood as part of the Red Cross’s Blood Service’s “what colour do you bleed?” campaign.

Late yesterday the Blues had a narrow lead with 261 donations compared to the Maroons’ 239- donation effort.

Thomas Meehan, who is an avid Maroons fan, decided to donate plasma after his Blues supporter wife, Kathrin, took up the challenge.

“We definitely should win this one,” he said.

“I’ve donated several times before to try and give back and you never know in the future when you might need blood.”

Townsville residents can currently only donate plasma due to dengue concerns. A total of 368 plasma donations are needed in Townsville this week to top up supplies.

Plasma contains proteins, nutrients and clotting factor which help to prevent and stop bleeding.

The mobile donation van will be at Lavarack Barracks this week before moving to the corner of Walker and Stokes Streets in the CBD next week.

People can also donate blood at the Townsville Donor Centre at Townsville Hospital in Douglas.
