SMILES AS KIDS ENJOY V8 THRILLS

- JOSH ALSTON

HE claimed two wins in the V8 Ute series at the weekend, but before Kris Walton returned to his home in Redcliffe, he had one more race to run.

But the prize on offer this time was far more valuable than any trophy, it was to raise smiles for very sick children.

Walton and fellow Rentco driver Chris Berry went out to the Sun City Raceway on Shaw Rd, Bohle Monday to take children from Ronald McDonald House North Queensland, Camp Quality and Townsville Hospital’s children’s oncology ward for laps in their V8 utes.

The day was organised by Walton’s mechanic Jade Clouten, a Townsville local, and Tony Lee whose son Matthew, 9, is recovering from the bone and soft tissue cancer sarcoma.

“It was awesome,” Walton said.

“Every young kid who jumped in was so stoked, it was something they never get to do.”

Mr Lee said the day was a golden chance for families doing it tough through illness to crack a rare smile.

“Our family has been through a big struggle, but today was more about other families,” he said.

“I know how hard it has been. It’s all about getting these people together, giving back.”

Ronald McDonald House North Queensland relationship and development manager Brad Hastewell said he was thrilled at the generosity of the Rentco racer team and Peters Motorsport.

“We are so grateful to Jade for organising this fantastic experience for the North Queensland kids who are living with a serious illness.”
