Advertise our potential
ANTHONY Templeton writes “Gloves off at Council”, TB 26/ 06/ 2014 and “Casting a long shadow”, TB 07/ 07/ 2014. In these two articles Mr Templeton reports disagreements between councillors. Both articles show that Townsville City Council are in total disarray.
The sadness is that as councillors bicker and portray incompetence, the people of Townsville suffer. In case councillors haven’t noticed, things are getting tougher throughout the Townsville region.
Confidence is low and businesses that haven’t already closed their doors are daily facing challenges to survive, keep their dedicated staff employed and service their loyal customers.
In another article Mr Templeton says: “Tell the world about this place.” I agree with him – we need to tell the world about the mighty potential of Townsville; wherever we go we need to encourage companies to invest in Townsville.
New investors such as Adelaide Brighton and Masters or companies who just want to expand such as Bunnings. Mr Templeton succinctly points out some business avenues with the capacity and capability to be harnessed and de- veloped. These should include state and federal funding for a new stadium, disaster and convention centre.
The council must realise this is not about their differences, this is not about councillors being outvoted at the next election, but this is about working for the community, creating opportunities, and de- livering a quality lifestyle for the people of Townsville.
Councillor Veitch is reported as saying “the Crime and Corruption Commission investigations was detrimental to the community’s perception of the council”. If the feedback I am getting is anything to go by the damage is done.
Former US President Lyndon B. Johnson said: “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.”
So to the councillors I say what is it? Is Townsville going to win or lose under your stewardship? If you can’t win – raise your hand and ask to be replaced. BRENDAN PORTER,
