The charity has been searching for a new location in Townsville after vacating its shop at Sunland Plaza late last year.

Red Cross Shops regional manager Linda Haanskorf said the new Flinders St store would be a first for Queensland, with a “funky, raw, industrial look,” right in the heart of the CBD.

“Not only will the store look good, we will still have all the great value quality ladies, men’s and children’s wear, accessories, toys, books and lots of trendy bric- a- brac that people have come to expect in all our shops,” Ms Haanskorf said.

“We will be right in the middle of the Flinders St Sunday Market vicinity area and, if we can attract enough shop volunteers, hope to be open seven days a week,” she said.

Indeed, now that the charity has found itself a new home, finding people to run it is the next step, organisers said.

“Red Cross Shops just wouldn’t survive without all our wonderful volunteers, and we now need an even bigger team to make the Flinders Street store a success,” Ms Haanskorf said

“All our volunteers get the opportunity to learn new skills in a fun and social environment.”

The 291 Flinders St site was formerly a Kodak shop.

It was leased by Knight Frank Townsville leasing executive Renee Nicol, who said she saw it as a positive sign of the central business district moving forward.
