Cup aspirations driving champions on

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

AS far as Cutheringa Bowls Club is concerned, the road to this year’s Dunn Cup goes through them.

Defending cup holders Cutheringa will host the annual lawn bowls tournaments starting Friday, which sees clubs from the North Queensland District Men’s Bowls Association compete for the title of district champions.

Jubilee and Ingham Bowls Clubs are the only teams to have won back- to- back championships in recent years, but Cutheringa captain Glen Atfield said they were confident of retaining the prized cup.

“It’s very hard to win two years in a row and it hasn’t been done that many times before, but our boys are up for it,” he said.

“This is the biggest thing in Townsville lawn bowls and everyone wants to win it, and there’s going to be a lot of strong competition from Suburban, Home Hill and Thuringowa.

“A lot of teams will be confident of winning it and the prize is to host it the year after, like we are now.” Clubs reap a financial windfall from hosting the annual four- day competition, which this year has attracted 19 teams.

Clubs from far north as Macknade, west to Hughenden and south to Bowen as well as cities and towns in between provide their best four players to play at the tournament.

Play begins at the Cutheringa Bowls Club, West End, from 9am Friday.

Games continue across the weekend and finish about 4pm Monday.
