Students lap up field experience

TOWNSVILLE TAFE students will get some hands- on experience in the ultimate revhead’s garage.

Students will do work experience during the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400, thanks to a partnership between TAFE and V8 Supercars.

Aspiring mechanic Taylah Pont, 15, has completed a Certificate II in automotive mechanics and now works at Repco. “I’m thrilled at the opportunity to be involved,’’ she said.

“When I heard about it, I applied straight away. I’m looking forward to meeting new people, gaining experience and I love working on cars so it’s a dream come true.”

Hairdressing trainees will also learn some valuable experience pampering ladies attending the event.

Students studying hospitality, event management, marketing, television, media, motorsport, engineering and commercial activities will also get on board the V8 team.

V8 Supercars Castrol EDGE Townsville 400 event manager Rachael White said the partnership offered students real- life, practical experience.

“Although we are a sport, we are also an events and entertainment business that has elements of event management, television, operations, motorsport, hospitality, marketing, communications, engineering, mechanics and education within,” she said.
