wledge that in my bid to cre- ate a school term filled with extra- curricular activities ( ballet, music, gymnastics, speech and drama, and swimming) I’m nurturing children who don’t know how to amuse themselves when faced with a day or an afternoon that does not include a structured activity.

So for half of this school holiday my children will be encouraged to embrace boredom.

Sure I may be gifted with non- stop whining but I can always put in my earplugs or perhaps escape to my garden to tackle the weeding.

You see, this school holidays I want my young children to simply potter around the house and garden and enjoy hours on end of unstructured play.

I want my cherubs to rummage their way through our large garden to find its many secret places. The type of places only children can find; the type of places children can only find after experiencing some time being bored.

And if they can’t find any joy in the garden, they could always help me with the seemingly never- ending weeding.

Keep in mind to that a toddler has a lot to learn about the world and often they are hitting when frustrated or wanting to get their own way, it certainly becomes worse like all behaviour when they are tired.

Think about the situation. If you are at a playgroup with a handful of other parents, toddlers tend to play well for about an hour then they “expire”.
