SUPPORT FOR CANCER FUND IN THE PINK

- VICTORIA NUGENT

RUGBY union players switched their usual club colours for some pink highlights at the weekend, all in the name of beating breast cancer.

The Western Suburbs Rugby Club wore green and pink jerseys and pink socks for the charity fundraiser at Tony Ireland stadium.

It’s the sixth year the Pink Lady Day has been held, raising more than $ 1 million for breast cancer research as part of the annual campaign between the Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group and the PA Research Foundation.

Club president Martin Budai said the day was a success.

“There were pink polos and pink socks everywhere, it was a great sight to see out there,” he said.

“The atmosphere was awesome, the people that were there were either buying pink shirts to help raise funds or turning up in their own pink outfits.”

Mr Budai was still finalising the fundraising tally but estimated it would be between $ 5000-$ 6000.

A- grade coach Alex Sadler- Purkiss said spectators and teams always got behind the day.

“No one’s afraid of wearing pink on that day,” he said. “It’s probably bigger than a final for us.”

The day is an initiative between the club and Irish Finnegan’s Hotel.

Venue manager Phillip Kiehne said many people at the hotel and the club had been touched by breast cancer.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate and can affect anyone at any stage of their lives, which is why it’s important that we come together for events like this to help raise funds that make a difference to people’s lives,” he said.
