Townsville Bulletin

NEWS TIME FOR KIDS

-

A GROUP of aspiring young reporters at Southern Cross Catholic College are putting their journalism skills to the test and producing their own school- based news bulletin.

Shine News is a fortnightly bulletin which is fully scripted, filmed and edited by students.

Under the direction of teacher Veronica Horn, the student reporters deliver news stories from around the school, covering issues such as student achievements, reminders about assessment, upcoming events on the school calendar and what’s happening in the different sporting groups and clubs.

The team films the video segments on an iPad and then upload the news bulletin to YouTube for the school to view.

Mrs Horn said the idea came about as a way to make morning notices more interesting and entertaining for students. “With so much information being shared in Homeroom, we thought it would be great to present it in a more engaging way,” she said.

“Our news team is very independent and tech- savvy so once we’ve made a plan for the fortnight, I leave the rest in their capable hands.”

The Shine News team is made up of Year 8 and 9 students, including Ashlyn Naughton, Zoey Mitchell, Erin Lumsden, Chelsea Mann, Emily Labelak and Daniel Harley ( pictured left).

Students are encouraged to submit articles to Inspire and last year Southern Cross was awarded the honour of being the school with the most articles published in the weekly liftout.
