- EMMA CHADWICK

Scholarship win

TOWNSVILLE teenager Mitchell Riggs is destined for big things.

The 17- year- old was flipping burger patties at McDonald’s North Shore last year when he landed himself a $ 15,000 scholarship from his workplace.

Mitchell studied high school from his Bushland Beach home via a virtual classroom with the Brisbane School of Distance education.

Not only has he excelled at his studies, he had advanced so far ahead in the self- paced program that he was able to complete Years 11 and 12 in one year.

McDonald’s North Shore licensee Paul Rissman was so impressed with Mitchell’s attitude and dedication to study, he recommended him for the company’s Charlie Bell Scholarship for future leaders.

“He’s an extremely worthy recipient of this scholarship and I’m sure he’ll continue to excel in all that he puts his mind to as he begins this exciting chapter of his life,” Mr Rissman said.

Mitchell will travel to Brisbane next month to begin a double degree in Law and Chinese language at the University of Queensland.

“It is pretty exciting and it is definitely a boost for me to get this scholarship,” Mitchell said.

“This scholarship will allow me to work reduced hours during semester, meaning that I can focus more on study.”
