Fury eager to keep good times rolling

THE Northern Fury are getting the job done at home, now they want to take their form on the road.

Backing up from a club record 8- 0 win over the Sunshine Coast Fire, the Fury travel to Brisbane today to take on Queensland NPL powerhouse Redlands United.

The Fury have won both their home games and have a 10- 0 for and against goal record when it comes to home form, but playing outside North Queensland has been a different story.

Last month’s season opener resulted in a 3- 1 away loss to Moreton Bay, and the Fury returned from the Queensland capital a fortnight ago having suffered a 3- 0 defeat against Brisbane City.

Fury captain Corey Waples is keen to keep the good times rolling, but says his team has its feet planted firmly on the ground.

“The confidence is skyhigh, which you would expect it after a win like that, but we know we have a job to do,” he said.

“We’ve scored 10 goals playing at home and conceded none, so that speaks for itself, but now we have to take it on the road.

“Travel is tough and we do a lot of it, but it’s a hurdle we have no choice but to overcome.”

Today’s game in Brisbane kicks off at the relatively early time of 3pm, giving the Fury a potential advantage.

The Fury, who sweltered through pre- season training in torrid tropical conditions, plan to run Redlands off their feet.

Redlands scored a season first 1- 0 win over SQW Thunder last weekend, but hold a 2- 1 win- loss record and a draw.

“The heat might get to them a little more,” Waples said.

“We’re planning to do what worked against Sunshine Coast, which was being the first to everything, winning challenges and winning tackles.

“We want to keep session a lot more.

“When it’s all said and done we’re not travelling there to get a draw, we want the three competition points.”

The Fury are sitting fifth on the NPL table and can break into the top three with a third, a situation last year’s playing group could only dream of.

Waples said last weekend’s win helped jettison the hardships he and his teammates had endured throughout the past two seasons.

“Without taking anything away from ‘ Fergie’ ( former Fury coach Ian Ferguson) that result was really refreshing and it helped reinstall a lot of confidence in us as individuals,” he said.

“It also brought us close together as a team.”

While the Fury will esape the Townsville wet this weekend, North Queensland Football has had to postponed this weekend’s senior games.

The governing body has cancelled games as a result of heavy weather, including tonight’s premier league matches.
