Elgey has chance to step up in attack

- TRAVIS MEYN PETER BADEL

TITANS halfback Ashley Taylor has challenged playmaking partner Kane Elgey to loosen the shackles ahead of tonight’s showdown against the club that is targeting him.

It was revealed yesterday Cowboys coach Paul Green had earmarked Elgey as a possible replacement for Johnathan Thurston when he retires.

Titans coach Neil Henry was quick to throw cold water on the suggestions, claiming the under- contract Elgey’s future should not be a talking point.

Green will get a close look at Elgey at Cbus Super Stadium tonight when the Cowboys attempt to bounce back from last week’s loss to Manly.

While Taylor has started the year in hot form, Elgey has been slow out of the blocks in his comeback from a knee reconstruction.

Elgey, 23, has shown glimpses of his best at fiveeighth and Taylor said he had to get more involved to find the form that made him the Gold Coast’s rookie- of- theyear in 2015.

“He’s a bit hesitant at times. I’m sure he’s just nervous about getting back and playing some good footy,” Taylor said.

“I’m backing him to get back into the form he was in before he did his knee.”

Elgey was a rare shining light for the Titans in 2015, but didn’t play a game last year due to a pre- season knee injury.

With only 19 NRL games under his belt he has still lots to learn and is a notoriously hard marker on himself.

“It’s been a bit of a bad start,” Elgey said. “I’m a confidence player, and to be honest I’m not playing with confidence at the moment.”
