Broncos finally seal deal with a Kahu field goal
JORDAN Kahu has emerged as Brisbane’s unexpected hero, kicking the winning field goal in yet another nail biter for the Broncos.
With just five minutes left on the clock and the match locked at 12- all, it was not halves pairing Anthony Milford or Ben Hunt who stepped up to end the standoff with Canberra, but versatile winger Kahu.
The Kiwi international, decked out in the Iron Man superhero jersey, kicked his first NRL field goal and handed the Broncos a 13- 12 victory on home turf.
The win came just two weeks after the Broncos lost in golden point to the Cowboys, when Milford stood as Brisbane’s only option to take a field goal.
But it seems coach Wayne Bennett corrected that situation before the tense showdown – and it was a tactic that certainly worked for Brisbane.
Canberra were caught out by Kahu and failed to level the scores in the dying minutes of the game.
Despite the fact Kahu produced the matchwinning moment, halfback Hunt did show that he has rediscovered his mojo with an outstanding performance against the Raiders.
On a night in which star five- eighth Milford once again struggled, Hunt was nearly back to his best form, constantly threatening the Canberra line and even setting up his skipper Darius Boyd for a second half try.
The win will take a lot of pressure off the Broncos who had two losses from their opening three matches.
Despite putting in some strong performances to start the year, Brisbane had failed to close out their last two matches, which were both close affairs against the Cowboys and Storm.
But they were not about to repeat that against Ricky Stuart’s side.
After a grinding first forty minutes, with both sides going into halftime at a 2- all deadlock, it was Andrew McCullough who brought the match alive in the second stanza, scoring under the posts for the first try.
