ARTISTS BRUSH UP FOR BIG EVENT

- CHRIS McMAHON

WORK by artists from all over the world will be featured in Townsville in the coming months as Strand Ephemera quickly approaches.

The art installation on The Strand will open from July 28 to August 6, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to check out an array of unique works.

Local artist Harriet GeaterJohnson is preparing her work.

“I’m at the end of The Strand near the museum, so I’ve got a museum cabinet that will have ceramic endangered animals in it,” she said.

“Within that habitat there will be things like rock wallabies and lots of animals from this region and other parts of Australia that are critically endangered or at risk.

“The idea is that this cabinet within the museum is going to soon be the only place where you can see these animals.”

Townsville City Council’s Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said it was exciting to see artists bringing their work to this year’s event.

“Strand Ephemera is a massive event held every two years on our iconic Strand which attracted about 130,000 visitors of all ages in 2015,” Cr Doyle said.

“The event attracts a very high calibre of artists from Townsville, the surrounding region, nationally and internationally.

“This year will be the ninth instalment of Strand Ephemera and the standard of work is simply getting better and better each event.”
