Call of south grows

-

MAROONS hierarchy have urged the State Government to erect a statue for Cameron Smith as the skipper prepares to make Origin history tonight.

Smith will become the first player in State of Origin’s 37year history to play 40 games when he leads the Maroons into battle against NSW in the series opener tonight.

It is a milestone that will never be beaten, according to Maroons legend Darren Lock- Team leaders and best mates Megan Kirk, 28, and Nichole Bowen, 36, have had their annual falling- out ahead of tonight’s State of Origin Game One in Brisbane. Megan reckons a few Blues stars might come out a bit worse for wear tonight, a bit like Nichole after having hand surgery. yer, whose previous Origin record of 36 games was surpassed by Smith last season.

Suncorp Stadium already features sculptures of Lockyer, Wally Lewis, Arthur Beetson and Mal Meninga and Queensland bosses say it’s time for Smith to be cast in bronze.

“I would love to see a statue for Cam at Suncorp,” former Maroons centre Gene Miles said.

“I think it’s only a matter of time before it happens, thoroughly deserves it.

“Cameron has played a huge role in the success we’ve had.

“When Darren Lockyer retired, I didn’t think we would replace his leadership easily but Cam has picked up that mantle and has run with it.

“His culture now drives the team.”

Since taking over in 2012, Smith has skippered the Ma- he roons to four series wins in five years.

Victory tonight would put the Maroons juggernaut within striking of an 11th series triumph in 12 years.

It is fitting Smith should chalk up his 40th Origin game at Suncorp. It was the scene of his debut for Queensland way back in 2003, when as a 20year- old he helped the Maroons to a 36- 6 victory.

“I am very excited, not just because it’s my 40th Origin match, it’s just another opportunity for me to represent the state,” he said.

“We’ve had a really good week with a few new faces ( Dylan Napa and Anthony Milford) in camp.

“I always cherish this jumper and I don’t like letting the Queensland people down. It will be the same feeling for this game.” PETER BADEL
