Boost for Broncos as star rake returns

- RIKKI- LEE ARNOLD

ANDREW McCullough will provide the Broncos with a major boost in Saturday’s clash against the Roosters after the star rake was named to make his return from concussion.

While Brisbane will have to wait to confirm the availability of their representative stars until after tonight’s Origin series opener at Suncorp Stadium, McCullough is a definite to play this weekend.

After the Broncos suffered a disappointing 28- 10 loss to the Warriors last Saturday without the No. 9, McCullough’s return will go a long way to helping the club turn their fortunes around.

Forward Korbin Sims said he noticed McCullough’s absence in New Zealand and will be happy to welcome him back into the fold.

“He brings so much to the middle, not only with his creativity with the ball but with his defence as well,” Sims said.

“He’s the lead tackler in the NRL. Averaging 50- odd tackles a game isn’t bad.

“I’m sure he’s really eager and ready to come back into the side this weekend. He’ll make up for his tackles that he missed on Saturday night from not playing.”

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett yesterday named a 23man squad to provide plenty of cover for his six Queensland stars, should they get injured tonight or need to be rested.

Tevita Pangai Jr also returns to the 17 following a successful return in the Intrust Super Cup last week from a finger injury.

Joe Ofahengaue, Benji Marshall, Jaydn Su’A, Jai Arrow, David Mead and Jonus Pearson are out of the 17, but could be recalled if any of the Origin contingent cannot back up.
