Hawks strike early and hold out Dogs
A STUNNING first half helped the University Hawks see off the Thuringowa Bulldogs 16.11 ( 107) to 11.10 ( 76) in AFL Townsville action over the weekend.
The second- placed Hawks held a commanding 55- point lead at the main break, which helped them withstand a vastly- improved second half from the Bulldogs at Tony Ireland Stadium.
Daniel Otley led the Hawks with five goals on the day while his teammates Phillip Burger and Jayden Lee chipped in with two goals apiece.
Thuringowa duo Lachlan O’Dwyer and Daine Macdonald were also impressive on the day as they managed four majors each for the beaten side.
In the other round 12 fixture the Hermit Park Tigers exploded for 200 points in their thumping victory over the Northern Beaches Suns at Neil French Oval on Saturday.
The Tigers’ incredible 29.26 ( 200) to 2.3 ( 15) victory over the Suns was built on the back of a 52- 1 opening quarter, with Northern Beaches unable to stem the endless flow of scoring.
Leroy Larson led all goalkickers with eight goals on the day, while Stannis Agita and Declan Wode also had a day out with five goals each in the lopsided result.
Next up for the Tigers is a top of the table clash with the University Hawks, while the Suns will look to bounce back against the Curra Swans.
In Saturday’s Townsville Bulletin it was reported the Tigers had lost to the Thuringowa Bulldogs in round 11, when they had in fact won by 52 points.
