Redskins rampant

- ROHAN O’NEIL

ROSS River have put their TDRU rivals North Ward to the sword with their emphatic 40- 10 win in a sign of just how good the Redskins can be when they’re fit and firing.

The Redskins and North Ward had split their previous two encounters this season but Ross River turned on the style at Mike Carney Toyota Park on Saturday to storm to a comfortable victory.

Ross River coach Rupeni Seru was delighted to welcome back some key players for the match and hoped his team could build on the result after a patchy first half of the season.

“We basically had all of our key players back who had been missing through injury, we were able to train together during the week and the boys played at their best on the weekend,” he said.

“As a team we’ve been on and off all year but I think we are finally starting to click.

“Our prop Jesse Tonu played really well, Ben Pearso was also great and got two runaway tries filling in for us at fullback. We also had Alex Munro for the first time in a while and he did a great job leading the group around the field while making a lot of good decisions.”

In other TDRU action this week a try- scoring double from scrumhalf Will Gallegos helped Brothers hold off a fastfinishing Burdekin in their 22- 12 win.

Brothers held a comfortable 17- 0 lead at the break and while Burdekin fought back through second half tries to Xander Barnard and Jeffrey Searle their comeback fell just short.

Defending premiers Teachers West were also on the winners list, easily accounting for the Miners 48- 5 in Charters Towers on Saturday.

Teachers had little trouble taking down the TDRU newcomers in the eight tries to one victory. TDRU RESULTS TEACHERS WEST 48 def CHARTERS TOWERS 5; BROTHERS 22 def BURDEKIN 12; ROSS RIVER 40 def NORTH WARD 10
