FASHIONABLE punters packed Cluden Park on Saturday to end the Townsville Turf Club’s winter racing season in style.

Thousands flocked through the gates from 10.30am for the fun, food, fashion and racing.

Townsville Turf Club chief executive officer Cassandra Cazzulino said there had been a huge turnout – 8154 visitors – and it was the first time in three years they had used the second car park at the track. Last year’s attendance was 6000. “This day is the pinnacle of our winter racing carnival,” Ms Cazzulino said. “We are feeling very optimistic that Townsville has supported this great event.”

The Townsville Cup day ticket included eight local races, an espresso martini bar, a garden party, fashions on the field and a designer showcase.

Guests included Queensland Premiere Annastacia Palaszczuk, who spoke after the Townsville Cup race had concluded.

Miss World Australia and the current face of Townsville racing, Madeline Cowe, was one of the Fashions on the Field judges.

Local entrant Katelyn Lucey said her favourite thing about the races was the fashion. “I just love fashion. It’s always good to come out here and see all the different things that are worn,” she said “I’ve had a great time. I love the races and I’ll definitely be back.”

Lady of Style winner Dimitty Baird, another local entrant, said she loved the atmosphere of the event along with the fashion.

“I’ve been to the track a few times, but I’ve never entered Fashions on the Field,” she said. “It’s been amazing and I’m probably going to be doing it again. General admission has been great because I’ve seen everything. It’s really good being outside. You can see everyone and you get a great grasp of all the fashion.”

Brittney Tamou, wife of former Cowboys player James, was named Style Queen, taking over from Madeline Cowe as the Face of Winter Racing. Ms Tamou will represent Townsville at the Mackay Beach Races Fashions on the Field competition, with the potential to gain direct entry to the Melbourne Cup Fashions on the Field competition if she wins.

She will also be the first official social media star for the Townsville Turf Club.

This year’s Cup winner was Chivadahlii from Rockhampton, trained by Jamie McConachy. MORE PHOTOS: PAGE 12
