Kyburra body on notice

- SAMANTHA HEALY

A TOWNSVILLE aboriginal corporation could be placed into special administration following a long- running investigation by the regulator.

Kyburra Munda Yalga Aboriginal Corporation was recently issued with a Notice to Show Cause by the Office of the Registrar for Indigenous Corporations after the organisation was ordered to hand over its books to external investigators earlier this year.

That order came after a breakaway group of members wrote to the regulator alleging that Kyburra had failed to accept memberships, keep proper minutes from its director meetings or provide accurate financial records.

The complaint, seen by the Townsville Bulletin, raised further concerns about what they called “financial irregularities” in Kyburra’s published financial statements for 2013- 14 and 2014- 15.

The complainants further alleged that Kyburra had failed to document moneys received from Indian mining giant, Adani, and the State Government.

Kyburra was appointed as the representative body for the Juru native title claim.

ORIC would not disclose whether Kyburra intended to fight the proposed special administration.

But in publicly available documents, ORIC delegate Ruth Jones said the proposed action was the result of the recent examination of the corporation’s affairs by external investigators, BRI Ferrier.

“The notice sets out in detail all of the matters that are of concern to me,” she wrote.

Those details have not yet been made publicly available.
