Jacob has an eye on state seat for Labor
T O WNS V I L L E c o u n c i l l o r Paul Jacob has announced his nomination to run for Labor in the seat of Hinchinbrook.
Cr Jacob made the announcement at the council’s general meeting yesterday, with the water and waste chairman to immediately step down from the committee.
If he is endorsed he will take leave from his role as councillor, without pay.
It comes after Cr Jacobs told the Bulletin last week he would not be running for the seat.
Cr Jacob said he made his decision yesterday morning.
“I have had a lot of people ring me since there’s been articles around saying: ‘ Paul you live here ( Bushland Beach), most of the seat is in Townsville. Can you put your hand up to nominate and represent us?’ And I did,” he said.
“At this point in time I don’t know if there’s anyone running, I have just nominated.”
If selected, Cr Jacob will run against sitting MP Andrew Cripps and One Nation candidate Margaret Bell.
However, it’s expected that Cr Jacob will be announced as the seat’s Labor candidate in coming days.
“I’ll be doing quite a lot of my campaigning in the Townsville area,” he said. “I think the keys to winning are the Townsville northern suburbs. I intend on representing everybody, especially my constituents here in Townsville.”
The seat of Hinchinbrook stretches from Deeragun to Euramo, south of Tully.
