Learn how to work smart

- GEOFFREY KNIGHT ANDREW BACKHOUSE

IF YOU’RE a small- business owner, free workshops next Wednesday and Thursday could change your life forever.

Those are the dates that renowned business and marketing strategist Damian Morgan will be conducting workshops at The Ville Resort- Casino on how to transform your business into a resounding success.

According to Mr Morgan, for businesses to succeed they need to cut through the clutter.

“One of the biggest mistakes that some small businesses make is that they’re the best- kept secret in town,” he said. “The number of ads out there now is exponentially greater than what it was two years ago. You need to attract attention and get your slice of the pie.

“Remember, if the pie’s not getting bigger, then you need to get more of that pie.

“By that I mean, in order to succeed, you need to get more share of what’s available. That’s what I’ll be showing people in these workshops.”

Mr Morgan has forged an impressive career as a marketing strategist and creative writer. He is an MBA- qualified management consultant and company director, as well as a former current affairs broadcaster and “resident poet” for ABC Grandstand, Fox Sports and Triple M.

As such, Mr Morgan is both a creative and strategic thinker, possessing that rare ability to combine the art and science of marketing. But it’s not simply his marketing acumen that makes Mr Morgan a valuable resource for Townsville’s small- business community.

Having grown up on a cattle property in western Queensland, Mr Morgan knows the path to success in regional cities such as Townsville.

He understands what makes small- business owners tick and knows how to drive customers through the door.

“Any business can make money in a boom,” he said.

“But when times are tougher, that’s when great business models are forged. If you have the opportunity to tweak your business model, those things will help you through the tough times.

“In these workshops, I’ll share examples of small businesses in regional towns that have adopted great strategies and made them work.”

One of these strategies, he says, is innovation.

“There’s always room grow if you innovate.” to TOWNSVILLE doctors will be on hand to oversee one of the toughest contests in sport.

The team of doctors will be part of the medical team at the Rugby League World Cup and will care for any injured players.

Townsville is hosting three games at Townsville Stadium in Annandale: Fiji vs USA on Saturday and then a double header the following weekend with Italy vs USA and Fiji vs Wales on Sunday, November 5.

Dr Brendon Aubrey of Sports Clinic NQ was appointed match day doctor and recruited a team of local specialists who have volun- teered to be on hand. Orthopedic surgeons Dr John Maguire and Dr Matt Wilkinson volunteered, along with ophthalmologist Dr Ian Reddie, maxillofacial surgeons Dr Ben Rahmel and Dr Trent Lincoln and dentist Dr Josh Pond.

Injured players will be able to access the newly opened Mater Hospital Pimlico Emergency Department.

“Townsville is a sporting town and we have many specialists with the skills and experience to treat elite athletes,’’ Dr Aubrey said. `` With the long- running success of the Cowboys, many of the specialists are excited to be involved in a rugby league event of this calibre”.
