WORLD Trump made me cry: widow

-

THE widow of a US Army sergeant killed in combat said Donald Trump made her “upset and cry” because he couldn’t remember her fallen husband’s name during a controversial condolence call.

“It made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it. He couldn’t remember my husband’s name,” Myeisha Johnson said during an interview on US program Good Morning America overnight.

“The only way he remembered my husband’s name was because he told me he had my husband’s report in front of him – that’s when he actually said La David.”

“I heard him stumbling trying to remember my husband’s name,” Mrs Johnson said. “And that’s what hurt me the most. Because if my husband is out fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name? And that’s what made me upset and cry even more, because my husband was an awesome soldier.”

Mr Trump called Mrs Johnson last Tuesday as she and family members and Democratic Congresswoman, Frederica Wilson, a friend, drove to Miami International Airport to meet the body of her husband, Sergeant La David Johnson, who had been killed in Africa on October 4 along with three other soldiers.

The widow said they put Mr Trump on speakerphone so that her aunt and uncle could hear the conversation. “What he said was …. ‘ He knew what he signed up for – but it hurts anyway’,” she said in the interview.

Mr Trump responded to Mrs Johnson’s comments on Twitter, denying he forgot her husband’s name on the call.

The phone call set off a controversy when Congresswoman Wilson, a Florida Democrat, said Mr Trump’s remarks were insensitive.

Mr Trump said Ms Wilson “fabricated” his comments.

But Mrs Johnson, a pregnant mother- of- two, supported Congresswoman Wilson’s version of the conversation.

“Whatever Ms Wilson said was not fabricated. Whatever she said was 100 per cent correct,” she said.

“The phone was on speakerphone. Why would we fabricate anything like that?”

Asked if she would like to tell Mr Trump anything she replied: “Nothing to say to him.”

Sergeant La David Johnson and three other soldiers were killed in Niger during an ambush.
