Coach reckons Peirson will be like bull at a gate
JIMMY Peirson has been tipped to “go gangbusters” in the Sheffield Shield, with coach Wade Seccombe declaring Queensland’s new wicketkeeper has the potential to be a future international star.
The Bulls begin their campaign against reigning champions Victoria under lights at the Gabba tomorrow.
The retirement of veteran gloveman Chris Hartley following a 13- year domestic career has opened the door for Peirson.
The 25- year- old, a regular for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, will now become a Shield fixture.
Peirson is an explosive batsman but it is his glovework that Seccombe, a former Bulls wicketkeeper, is excited to see.
“Jimmy is a natural leader and more than capable of step- ping into that role,” he said. “He is an incredibly talented keeper and batsman.
“My advice to Jimmy is to stay relaxed and enjoy the process. He knows he is good enough for this level and higher levels.
“If he doesn’t put too much pressure on himself, he will go gangbusters.”
Peirson has played only five first- class matches, having had few opportunities to play in the Shield while the consistent and reliable Hartley was in the mix.
Matthew Wade ( 24) and Peter Nevill ( 29) made their Test debuts late in their careers and the door certainly isn’t shut on Peirson playing international cricket down the line.
He opened the batting for the Heat with Kiwi legend Brendon McCullum but Seccombe said his game would be tested in the four- day format.
“From a keeping perspec- tive, he’s got to maintain focus for a long duration and showcase his skills,” he said.
“They are skills you don’t always get to showcase in Big Bash games because there are limited opportunities. Over the course of the season we will see what he’s got to offer.’’
The Bulls will be captained by Usman Khawaja and Test opener Matt Renshaw will play tomorrow’s match against the Bushrangers.
