Warning to be cyclone savvy

-

WITH North Queensland’s cyclone season under way, Townsville residents are being reminded they are responsible for their own safety in the event of a natural disaster.

Mundingburra MP Coralee O’Rourke and Acting Mayor Les Walker yesterday met with Townsville SES officers to emphasise the importance of being cyclone- ready.

Ms O’Rourke said residents should prepare now.

“If you don’t currently have your emergency and evacuation kit well stocked and if you’re not quite prepared then now is the time to do that,” she said.

“I also want to remind the community of those in our community that may be a little more vulnerable.”

Cr Walker said it was important for everyone to have a plan.

“It’s important to talk to neighbours who may be new to the city,” he said.

“It’s very easy to be complacent. Every year it’s cyclone season and people go out and get prepared and nothing happens. “It’s best to be prepared.” Cr Walker said if residents didn’t have a plan or a kit, the result could be catastrophic.

“You are responsible for your own safety,” he said. “We need to plan for those scenarios right here on our doorstep. “Be prepared for the worst case scenario.” For more information on how to get cyclone- ready visit https:// getready. qld. gov. au/ homepage/
