Stepping stone for specialist housing needs

- CHRIS LEES

WORK on a specialist disability and health accommodation facility could begin later this year.

A development application for the project at 80- 84 Abbott St, Oonoonba, has been lodged with Townsville City Council.

Alliance Rehabilitation is behind the plan, which in- volves five two- bedroom units built on the four blocks.

Financial director Trent van Grinsven said there were not many similar facilities in Townsville.

“Each unit is being designed to have provisions to have a high level of accessibility,” he said. “People with high- level disabilities can be comfortable.”

Mr van Grinsven said the development was for people transitioning from hospital to their own accommodation.

“There’s no fixed term ( of how long you can stay) but it’s more of a stepping zone to get people out of hospitals and back into the community,” he said.

The company hopes the development application is approved quickly.

“We’re really pushing to get this operational by the second half of the year,” Mr van Grinsven said.

Mr van Grinsven said if the Oonoonba development was successful, Alliance Rehabilitation would look at similar developments at other sites.

According to the company, services in the units will be tailored to suit individual needs.
