Divine intentions as church hits market

- CHRISTIE ANDERSON christie. anderson@ news. com. au

AN ANGLICAN church with huge potential is up for sale but there’s a catch, it’s pick- up only.

The church was formerly owned by the Anglican diocese before the land it sits on was purchased by Ellis Developments to be used for their Railway Cottages housing estate.

Instead of bulldozing the church, CEO of Ellis Development Stephen Ellis decided to remove the building’s asbestos and carpet so it could be sold.

However, the church has to be moved to make way for construction so the lucky buyer will have to find it a new home and relocate it.

Mr Ellis said the church had been well built.

“When you walk through the church you notice the high vaulted ceilings, hardwood flooring in good condition and all the light and breeze that comes through the casement and louvre windows throughout,” he said.

“I saw a lot of potential for the building to find a good home instead of just doing the easy thing and tearing it down.”

The church is advertised for sale on Gumtree and is being marketed as a restoration project.

It has hardwood flooring, cathedral ceilings and intact glass windows with the excep- tion of two windows. It measures 19m long by 7.5m wide and has 143 sq m of floor space.

There have already been several interested parties including a buyer who wants to relocate it to his large block nearby and convert it to an AirBnB catered to people attend the Supercars or events at the new stadium.

Another family from far north Queensland want to move it to their block and con- vert it into an art and music studio, while some former parishioners want to band together and relocate it.

Mr Ellis said the church had huge potential so he was hoping a new home could be found for it.

“We have spent a significant amount of money to safely and properly remove all the asbestos and prepare it for relocation,” he said.

“We have also already sold the land on which the church sits.

“We are accepting any and all offers.

“We understand it is a bit of an undertaking as the buyers will have to organise the relocation of the building.”
