SWANS AIM T O BUILD WITH E ARLY BLITZ
THE revitalised Curra Swans are ready to launch into a new season of footy starting with the annual AFL Townsville Preseason Blitz at Neil French Oval today.
The competition’s five senior men’s teams will take the field in a round- robin format, with 30- minute games culminating in this afternoon’s final.
Four women’s teams will also be in action with Curra fielding a side for the first time against players from Northern Beaches, Thuringowa, and Hermit Park.
The Swans have endured a lean run over the past few seasons, and last season was again tough on the club’s senior men’s side, but the Swans are hoping for more positive results in 2018 under new coach Peter Goodwin.
Goodwin has been around the Swans since the start of their premiership “threepeat” in 1996 and the past player and club president said he was excited to take the reins as head coach.
“I’ve always harboured the desire to be the A- grade coach, but I haven’t been in the position with work or whatever where I could commit to that sort of thing,” Goodwin said.
“Numbers are pretty good so far.
“The guys are training hard so things are positive as they stand.
“I’m happy with the way the guys are training and applying themselves. They’re keen to have a go so you can’t ask for any more than that.”
Curra has been on the wrong end of some lopsided scorelines in recent seasons and Goodwin said their focus would be building the club back up before they start talking premierships.
“To be competitive No. 1 goal,” he said.
“It’s just small steps and one thing at a time.
The more we can train together as a team and get used to each other the better we’ll be.”
Goodwin said recruitment was still a major focus for the Swans during the preseason.
And he encouraged any players interested in having a run to contact him on 0400 505 862.
Today’s preseason blitz starts from 9.15am with the men’s final at 5.30pm.
The the women’s teams will be in action from noon before the final at 4pm. is the
