Boars to lay down platform

- TRENT SLATTER

UNIVERSITY coach Tuaine Meaaroa has given his side the freedom to play what’s in front of them as the club makes its long- awaited return to the Townsville and District Rugby Union A- grade competition this afternoon.

The Boars will play their first senior game since 2014 when they take on Charters Towers at Mike Carney Toyota Park.

JCU Rugby formed more than half a century ago as one of the competition’s foundation clubs and excitement is building for their A- grade revival after a merger with the Western Suburbs junior club.

University will go into their season opener without a trial game while a few players are also unavailable this weekend, but Meaaroa said their main goal was to start laying the platform for future success.

“Basically, I just told them to play to what’s in front of them so that way they can get a fair idea and start to enjoy it and then they can take the next step,” the coach said.

“We’ve just had a short window really to get them up to speed what it’s like to play Agrade.”

In today’s other matches, Brothers and North Ward play at Mike Carney Toyota Park, and Burdekin take on Teachers Wests in Ayr.

TDRU, Round 2: Charters Towers v University, 4.20pm at Mike Carney Toyota Park; Brothers v North Ward, 5.50pm at Mike Carney Toyota Park; Burdekin v Teachers West, 6pm at Casalegno Field, Ayr.
