Davison duo seek Panorama history
WILL and Alex Davison will reunite as they try to become the first brothers in history to win the Bathurst 1000 as co- drivers this year.
The Davisons will team up for 23Red Racing as Alex, 38, joins the team as full- time driver Will’s Endurance Cup co- driver for the first time since 2015.
Will, 35, said the brothers had “unfinished business” with the famous Mount Panorama circuit following their fourth place in the chaotic 2014 Bathurst 1000 driving for Erebus Motorsport.
“I love this sport because of my family,’’ Will said.
“They are the reason I am here and the reason I race. So to get the opportunity to have a crack at winning Bathurst with my brother again is just magic. I can’t begin to describe what it would mean to me.
“And after going so close in 2014 in that crazy race, well it certainly feels like unfinished business.’’
The brothers are chasing a dream that began 28 years ago when they began racing each other in go- karts.
“And I would rather be racing with him than against him,’’ Will said.
“I am just thankful to get that opportunity again. I honestly never thought it would happened after we parted ways in 2015. I am just stoked it has happened and we will go out there and do our best. Hopefully by then we will have the car and the package to have a real shot.’’
After pulling together a last- minute deal to remain in the series this year as a full- time driver at 23Red Racing, Will revealed he had almost given up on his Supercars career.
“I was a bit shattered at the end of last year when it looked like I had nothing,’’ Will said.
“I thought my journey was over. But fortunately things came together and it worked out. And now it is just getting better and better.”
The Bathurst reunion is the latest chapter in a proud family racing tradition – grandfather Lex was a fourtime Australian Grand Prix champion and their father Richard was an accomplished racer.
“To get Alex back on board for the endurance races is just icing on the cake,” Will said. “I have really wanted another shot with him and to know it will happen with a good car gives us a realistic shot.’’
Alex, who is competing full- time in the FIA World Championship Endurance season in a Porsche, said he was looking forward to driving alongside his little brother.
“It is a privilege to get the chance to drive with Will again,’’ Alex said. “I jumped at the chance.’’
Will resumes his Supercars title bid this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
