Feds give $ 1.8m for city black spot fixes

- TONY RAGGATT

TWO dangerous Townsville intersections have received more than $ 1.8 million in funding under the Federal Government’s 2018- 19 Black Spot Program.

According to data provided by the Government, four accidents involving injuries occurred at each of the intersections during the five years to 2016.

More than $ 1.5 million will be spent installing a roundabout, managing property accesses and realigning a pedestrian and cycle path at the intersection of Mount Low Parkway and Shoalmarra Drive, Mount Low.

The main issue cited was drivers failing to properly judge gaps in the traffic when turning right into and out of Shoalmarra Drive.

About $ 355,500 was committed to installing a channelised intersection at the corner of Banfield Drive and Mount Louisa Drive, Mount Louisa.

Again, the main issue cited was drivers failing to properly judge gaps in the traffic when turning right into and out of Mount Louisa Drive.

Both projects were nominated by Townsville City Council, which will be responsible for either delivering or contracting the works.

The Townsville funding is part of $ 32.9 million allocated for roadworks at dangerous road trouble spots across Queensland, NSW and Western Australia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack announced the funding for 144 projects.

“Road safety is a national problem and matters to every single community,” Mr McCormack said.
