Motorsports venue a must, says Scott

-

GROWING up in Townsville in the ’ 90s, Scott Urry was a typical kid, which meant he was mad keen on motorbikes and cars.

Now he’s grown up and has boys of his own, Scott says he’s still a revhead at heart and he believes Townsville is crying out for a motorsports venue that would be “packed out for every meeting.”

Scott’s parents are both Kiwis and were “fairly nomadic when they were young.”

“I was born in the Pilbara and my brothers and sister were all born in the Burdekin,” he said.

“We moved to New Zealand in 1984 and back to Townsville in 1990.

“I guess my folks had enough of moving around by then as we stayed here ever since.”

The family lived in Kelso and Scott went to Thuringowa High.

When he finished school, there was one clear path for Scott — and so he started his apprenticeship as a mechanic at Bob Parkes Muffler City ( now Bob Parkes Automotive) in Hyde Park.

Scott also worked in mining and heavy road industries in Townsville as a mechanic/ fitter until about three years ago when he decided to work for himself and leased a small shop in Garbutt.

“Since then it has grown with my younger brother Ben finishing an overseas mining contract and becoming part of what is now our joint venture,” Scott said.

Ben did his first apprenticeship at Beehive Vinyl Products then another apprenticeship at Century Mine as a heavy diesel fitter.

The business is called Industry Plus Pty Ltd and is a predominantly automotive workshop but Ben specialises in field service and airconditioning repairs to all sorts of trucks, machinery pumps and generators, while Scott stays mostly in the workshop with car and light truck repairs.

“We don’t argue much as we seem to share common goals in life and business,” Scott said.

Scott’s a single dad to two boys aged 15 and 12.

“I look after my youngest son full- time and he is at Pimlico High and his older brother lives in Wulguru and we see him every few weeks,” he said.

In Scott’s spare time he enjoys riding his motorcycle or just going for a run along The Strand or the river.

“I enjoy cooking and eating my own food,” he said.

“I am looking forward to watching speedway at Pioneer Park in Brandon again soon as I am still a revhead at heart.”

As for Townsville, Scott’s a fan but he does think the city has lost some of its great outdoor activities like “riding dirt bikes at the uni tracks and waterskiing at Paluma.”
