Police seek witnesses to car fire

- SAM BIDEY

POLICE are investigating a crash which saw a woman pulled from a burning car.

A 24- year- old Scottsville woman was driving along Gollogoly Lane about 1.45am yesterday when she failed to negotiate a roundabout.

Kirwan police station officer- in- charge Senior Sergeant Jason Brosnan said the red Toyota Camry rolled on to its side and crashed into a residence’s brick wall.

The engine bay caught fire and the woman was unable to escape the car.

“The vehicle has slid on its side, striking a wall and has burst into flames,” Sen- Sgt Brosnan said.

A 27- year- old Railway Estate man rushed to the woman’s aid, smashing the rear window of the car and pulling her out before the fire spread.

Sen- Sgt Brosnan said the man saved the woman’s life but police are investigating where the man was when the car struck the wall and what factors contributed to the crash.

“I can’t confirm whether he was a passenger of another vehicle or in fact he was a passenger in that ( crashed) vehicle,” Sen- Sgt Brosnan said.

“You don’t need to be able to be a mechanical engineer to know for a vehicle to strike a median strip, flip on to its side and then strike a wall with sufficient force for the vehicle to catch fire that speed hasn’t played some factor in that accident.”

The woman was transported to Townsville Hospital by paramedics after the incident in a stable condition.
