Clash of titans as City meets Country
TOWNSVILLE’S best city and country footy players will go head- to- head tonight with the return of the traditional City v Country clash.
City coach Allan Peterson welcomed the return of the grassroots hit- up, which aims to bring out players’ maximum potential for Foley Shield hopefuls.
City’s line- up includes recently retired Blackhawks’ halfback Michael Parker- Walshe, towering centre Ty Carucci and Brothers hooker Sam Foster, who played for the Blackhawks in their win over Norths last weekend. But Country’s pack of 19 can more than stand up on its own with playmakers such as Blackhawks- contracted forward Kieran Quabba, and league veterans Aaron Solari and Adam Shaw.
Peterson expected a tough game after City had just one training session together.
“There’s a pretty good range of local talent in Townsville,” Peterson said. “It’s always tough in a one- off game.”
Country is in the exact same boat with the single training session under its belt.
But coach Mitchell Seri said his side showed good connections.
Seri said it was crucial to focus on the basics of keeping hold of the ball and completing sets.
“What wins the game ( tonight) wins every game of footy,” Seri said.
“With the limited preparation we’ve had ... we’ve got to stick to the basics.”
Seri said the City v Country was a good concept in helping develop young players.
City v Country under- 12s, U10s and U11s play at 6pm. U17s, U13s and U15s play at 6.50pm. A- grade, U14s and U16s kick- off at Kirwan’s TDJRL fields at 8pm.
