RIVERWAY PLAN TO SPLASH OUT FOR FAMILY FUN

- DANNI SHAFIK

WATERSLIDES and more child- friendly pools could be coming to Riverway as part of a plan to redevelop Riverway Lagoon.

Townsville City Council has awarded a contract to Townsville- based business Premise to deliver a concept plan examining ways to make the Riverway Lagoon more family friendly by upgrading facilities in the area.

Ideas could include installing waterslides, creating better linkages to the Ross River waterway, childfriendly water play spaces, and bringing a commercial operator into the precinct. Kirwan mother of four Shirin Welsh has two sets of twins, Cleo and Addison, 7, and Thea and Lawson, 3, and is a regular visitor to the lagoon.

“The addition of a waterpark would be really good,” Ms Welsh said. “We don’t get to The Strand waterpark very often, so we’d definitely come to a Riverway one if it was an option.”

Ms Welsh said the extra activity would also provide added security and protection around the area.

“I think a lot of families would feel more comfortable with the supervision around,” she said.

The Riverway waterpark project is part of the council’s Townsville 2020 masterplan.

“So many people use Riverway every day, we thought the area needed an upgrade,” she said.

“This concept plan will explore all options about what sort of waterpark could be built at Riverway and find out exactly what locals want for the area.”

Mayor Jenny Hill said the masterplan would provide a road map to ensure major projects, such as the waterpark, were completed or well on the way to completion by 2020.

The concept plan is expected to be completed by September.
