Q& A: NEED F OR FEED NEED FOR FEED BURRITO RECIPE
WHAT IS NEED FOR FEED ABOUT?
Need For Feed is a program designed by Diabetes Australia.
The program is distributed to many schools over Australia and is designed to teach children how to cook healthy meals and how to eat healthy.
It is also designed to encourage children like myself to try new foods.
At the start of each lesson the students also fill out a page in a booklet and complete activities that are relevant to eating and being healthy. WHAT TYPES OF FOODS HAVE THE CHILDREN MADE?
We have already made many different types of foods.
For example, in the first week we made healthy vegetable muffins with carrot and zucchini. They contained only a tiny pinch of brown sugar for 12 muffins!
In that week we also made a healthy pizza for us to eat at school. It was delicious. We make two different food items every week: one to eat for afternoon tea during the program and one to take home for our family to enjoy.
WHAT WAS THE BEST FOOD TO EAT AND TO COOK?
So far my favourite thing to eat has been the homemade healthy burritos, which were really delicious.
I especially enjoyed the program as I am a vegetarian and we could modify the recipe so it did not include meat.
My favourite thing to cook has definitely been the burrito, which would traditionally have meat.
But, I’ll give you a tip, DON’T put too much filling inside, as it will explode!
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM?
I would most definitely recommend this program. It is very fun and I love trying the foods. I also think that it’s a good way to teach students how to eat and cook healthy meals.
Thank you to my teachers at St Margaret Mary’s College for running the cooking program every Wednesday afternoon after school for eight weeks.
