Slice of history reborn

- CHRISTIE ANDERSON

A DISUSED heritage building on Flinders St will be reborn with a multimilliondollar renovation under way.

197 Flinders St, Townsville City, also known as Stanton House, was built in the 1880s and has tenancies for lease as the renovation nears completion.

Work on the building – which will create multiple tenancies for office, retail and hospitality use – is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

The three- storey colonial- style building overlooks the Ross Creek and is on a 1012sq m allotment with street frontage to the front and rear of the property.

Ray White Commercial agent Troy Townsend is marketing the property and said the renovation would create opportunities for new businesses to open in the heart of the city.

“The owner of Stanton House is in the final stages of a multimillion- dollar renovation to create two ground floor retail tenancies and four professional office suites on levels one and two,” he said.

“There is a total of 298 square metres of ground floor retail space which can be configured as two tenancies if required. These would be great for a bar or restaurant.

“The upper levels include office spaces from 90 to 294 square metres with fantastic views across the Ross Creek and Townsville Yacht Club Marina.

“New bathroom, kitchen, and lift facilities have also been installed.”

Lease rates for office space will start $ 220 per square metre while retail tenancies will start at $ 400 per square metre.

The historic building was built to house one of Townsville’s first butcheries in 1884. It was then occupied by an insurance company before being sold in 1932 and extended as headquarters for the Anglican Church.

At that time it was branded as Stanton House in honour of George Stanton, who was the first Anglican bishop of North Queensland.

It was eventually converted into professional office space for an accountancy firm and most recently was used as a retail space for an amusement centre.
