A CROWD PLEASER

- OLIVIA GRACE- CURRAN

RECORD crowds lined Woolcock St awaiting entry to the Townsville Show on Saturday in what has been hailed the event’s biggest Saturday in history.

Townsville Show manager Chris Condon said well over 60,000 people walked through the gates across the four days with Saturday well exceeding expectations.

“It was the biggest Saturday we’ve ever had,” Mr Condon said.

“The crowd line- up was to Woolcock St.”

He said the annual event was very successful and the Sunday showers didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of showgoers.

“There were no hiccups whatsoever,” Mr Condon said. “We were really happy right across the board and the town supported the show – that’s what it’s about.”

Crazy Coaster Ride operator Ashley Briscoe said the rides were always a firm fav- ourite with young showgoers.

“There have been a lot of excited young kids,” Mr Briscoe said.

Local performer Ian Zaro said the show reminded him of his childhood.

“It was a reward every year for us, now I treat myself,” Mr Zaro said.

“I come at least three times each year.”

He said it was a chance to spend time with family and friends.

“I love the show and I come every year, I love all the lights and the food.”

Port of Townsville Rotary Club said they were back in 2018 after thieves stole $ 1500 of their raffle prizes from their shed on the showgrounds last year.

President Ian Griffith said their lucky number raffle was a major fundraiser for the club and last year’s loss was difficult.

“It really knocked us around but we’re back again this year working together to help the community,” he said.
