Iggy Park go hard in Confro openers

- TRENT SLATTER

IGNATIUS Park coach Steve Lansley has praised the resilience of his young charges as they made an impressive start to the 2018 Confraternity Carnival in Charters Towers yesterday.

Iggy Park produced a sensational second half to beat The Cathedral College 16- 8 in their opening game before claiming a strong 22- 4 win over Emmaus College Rockhampton.

Halfback Hayden Rowbotham was named man of the match in both games while Lansley also praised the try- scoring talents of winger Mark Gardiner along with backrower Joey Jensen’s tireless work ethic. But the coach was most pleased with his side’s comeback against The Cathedral College as they trailed 8- 0 at half time before finding a way to win.

“I was really happy that the boys found it within themselves to come back and win that game. They showed a lot of desire,” Lansley said.

Iggy Park takes on St Edmund’s College Ipswich in their last pool game this morning before an expected quarter- final clash with defending champions Rockhampton Grammar later this afternoon.

Rockhampton Grammar beat Iggy Park in the grand final to win their inaugural Confro title last year.

“We’ve just got to make sure when it gets tough over the carnival that we can stand up and we’re up to the challenge,” Lansley said.

Meanwhile, Ryan Catholic College Townsville made a mixed start in Division 2 with a 30- 22 win over St Laurence’s College South Brisbane before going down to St Columban’s College Caboolture 14- 10.

St Anthony’s Townsville drew with Trinity College Beenleigh 6- 6 in their opening game in Division 3 before a 24- 10 loss to Our Lady of the Southern Cross College Dalby.
