Reynolds on a winning roll with no end in sight

- TRENT SLATTER

HE’S in the form of his career and larrikin Supercars driver David Reynolds is confident he can keep that charge going on one of his favourite tracks at Reid Park this weekend.

The Erebus driver rocketed back into championship contention with a memorable last round in Darwin, taking out the Sunday race with a big first- lap move to back up his third on the Saturday.

It was his second win of the season after Race 3 in Melbourne and saw Reynolds ( 1448 points) move into third on the standings behind Scott McLaughlin ( 1775) Gisbergen ( 1614).

The 33- year- old said he always enjoyed the hybrid circuit for the Townsville 400 and with his confidence high after Darwin, Reynolds felt he was primed for a big weekend.

“Any time you win the race it gives everyone a good boost and it proves that you can do it and you should be able to replicate it and do it again,” he said.

“Our performance on the track is quite good at the minute. I think we’re on an upward spiral and we’re going to try and keep it going up.

“It’s probably one of my favourite and Shane van races of the year ( in Townsville). I love all the street tracks and I honestly really enjoy it.

“You work your whole career to get in a little patch like we are now and it’s fun.”

That’s not to say Reynolds is banking on another victory in Townsville.

He went agonisingly close to winning the Saturday race in 2015 only to finish 0.2706 seconds behind then stablemate Mark Winterbottom in the closest winning margin in the event’s history.

Reynolds also endured a miserable round in Winton in May – finishing 25th and 15th – and he said it was im- portant that everything goes right as a team at Reid Park to keep him on the podium.

“Everyone thinks it’s an individual type sport, but that’s completely untrue. It’s all about the team,” he said.

“It’s a super competitive series and every time you go on the track you really don’t know who’s going to win. Sometimes things can happen in the races where it’s out of your control.

“It’s the team that makes the car go fast and they give you the tools to allow you to do your job.

“The cars are pretty easy to drive and they’re pretty fast when you can drive it properly.”
